    🦜 General Description

    The keel-billed toucan is a colorful tropical bird native to Central and South America. It is best known for its large, rainbow-colored bill, which looks heavy but is actually light and hollow. This toucan is not only famous for its beauty but also for its important role in the rainforest ecosystem.

    🌈 Main Characteristics

    Size:

    Around 42 to 52 cm (16.5 to 20.5 inches) in length, including the bill.

    The bill itself can measure up to 20 cm (almost 8 inches), nearly one-third of its total body length.

    Coloration:

    • Bill: Bright green with shades of orange, red, and blue.

      Body: Mostly black.
    • Throat and chest: Bright yellow.
    • Tail and underparts: Red and orange tones.
    • Feet: Pale blue.
    • Weight:

      Approximately 380 to 500 grams (0.8 to 1.1 pounds).

    • Lifespan:

      Up to 15–20 years in the wild, sometimes longer in captivity.

     

    🌿 Habitat and Distribution

    Found in rainforests and lowland tropical forests from southern Mexico to northern Colombia and Venezuela.

    Prefers the upper canopy, where it feeds and nests.

    🍇 Diet

    Omnivorous, but mainly frugivorous (fruit-eating).

    Also eats insects, small reptiles, bird eggs, and occasionally small frogs or lizards.

    Plays an important role in seed dispersal, helping trees grow throughout the forest.

    🐣 Reproduction

    Nests in tree cavities, often using holes made by woodpeckers.

    Lays 2 to 4 white eggs.

    Both parents care for the chicks.

    Chicks hatch blind and featherless and stay in the nest for about 8 to 9 weeks.
